Context

Currently, the start date filter is just three options:

Current start date filter on the live site

When a candidate filters by one of the two date ranges, we display the course start date on the search results:

Current search results page on Find, showing one result entry with the start date displayed

Pain points

When researching Reducing information on search results, and grouping courses of the same subject and provider we found participants find the search results on the live site overwhelming, and preferred more simplified search results.

User need

As a candidate, I need to be able to filter courses that start at a time of year that suits me.

What we did

To remove the start date to reduce information on the search results, we needed to update the start date filter.

We added more options to the filter and reduced the date ranges down to a maximum of 3 months.

Updated start date filter showing more options with smaller date ranges

We felt the smaller ranges meant we could remove the start date from the search results, as clicking through to the course to see the start date didn’t feel like it would significantly impact the user experience.

Next steps

We will be building these changes into the service, before we further reduce information on search results, and grouping courses of the same subject and provider.
