Background
Qualified teacher learning and skills (QTLS) is a professional status for teachers in the post-16 education and training sector.
It is:
- the equivalent of qualified teacher status (QTS)
- awarded by the Society for Education and Training (SET)
- maintained through membership of SET
QTLS holders are exempt from induction.
Since [date], SET has shared data with us on its members who hold QTLS.
We designed a way to present this information in the service.
If someone has QTLS
In the Induction section of the teacher’s record, we display:
You will no longer be exempt from induction if your Society for Education and Training (SET) membership expires.
In the Qualified teacher status (QTS) section we display:
You will no longer have QTS via QTLS status if your Society for Education and Training (SET) membership expires.
We have also updated the QTLS certificate users can download. It now says that the teacher:
- has attained QTS via QTLS status
- will lose QTS and their induction exemption if they do not renew their SET membership
If someone loses QTLS
A teacher will lose QTLS status if their SET membership expires. If this happens, we display the following text in the Induction section:
You are no longer exempt from induction because your Society for Education and Training (SET) membership expired.
In the Qualified teacher status (QTS) section we display:
You no longer have QTS via QTLS status because your Society for Education and Training (SET) membership expired.
We use the warning text component here to make it extra clear to users that they no longer have QTLS.
Service guidance
We updated the service guidance to say that a teacher’s record tells you whether someone has has QTLS.
