Many pages on the Get Into Teaching website had related content links on them. The links in this section were designed to help users continue their journey by signposting them to relevant pages.
We know from previous user research that related content does not work particularly well as users often scroll past it.
We’ve recently added new components to the site, which push the related content links further down when the pages are viewed on mobile. This means users’ onward journey options may be less prominent and therefore more likely to be missed.
In addition, maintaining related content links properly is time-consuming. Often the links in these sections have been chosen in an ad hoc way, rather than strategically.
With this in mind, we made the decision to remove the related content links section from each page.
To do this, we went through the pages with related links on and:
- reviewed how popular the links were by checking the number of clicks in Clarity
- considered if any of the links were important onward steps for users on each page
If the related links were an important onward step, we either added the links into the body content of that page, or used green arrow call to action (CTA) links.
Related content is defined in the front matter on a webpage under related_content, so we had to delete this from all the pages that featured this section.
In total, we removed the related content sections from 36 pages of the website. Users now have a clearer journey for what to do next as the most relevant links are either in the body content or green arrow CTA links.
