Sprint overview
FABS Sprint 2 Lucid board Epic 2: One place to find and choose a buying solution.
Problem to solve
Overall problem statement:
Schools miss out on DfE's existing and emerging procurement solutions and related savings because they're not aware of them, and when they are, they struggle to find them and choose the right one for them.
Sprint problem statement:
Users in schools aren’t aware of DfE buying solutions, and the breadth of what’s available to them (desk research finding).
Design challenge
HMW maximise awareness so users know about all buying solutions available to them, and are able to find and choose the right one?
Design hypothesis
We bet that if we have a way of collating all the buying solutions together in one place and support users to choose the right one, it will:
- meet the user need to raise awareness of the DfE offer
- meet the user need to help users find and navigate to the right one

Iterations
Designed in Prototype 3
- We add a tab at the top of the Energy page, so users can navigate between ‘Buying options’, ‘Guidance’ and ‘Training and support’.
- We created a new step in the user journey - a page for each buying option, which includes step-by-step guidance, compliance info and details on getting support from GHBS or peers.
- After speaking with ProcOps, we added content about rebate charges for frameworks, as this was described as a way to choose between different frameworks.
- We need to explore buying choices more through further testing, and a card sort experiment.
- We added a new piece of content, “How can I use my current supplier?”, under the new ‘Guidance’ tab,
- We added a ‘save items’ feature, as well as a ‘share by email’ feature so users can browse and then take actions after.
- We added content on rebate charges for frmarework.
- We need to continue to explore this need.
- We discussed a pricing ‘calculator’ idea but agreed this would be difficult with commercial liability restraints.
- We removed the filter, and show all buying options by default on the category page.
- We added content around what “DfE approved” means, at the top of the ‘Buying Options’ tab.
- We added content, namely “Listed in alphabetical order” to the top of the ‘Buying options’ tab.
- We explored meeting personalisation need through ‘My procurements' area.
- We need to scope this insight around showing usage or guide prices.
- We added guidance on using your current supplier.
- We explored listing suppliers in frameworks, so they can scan and see if their supplier is in the framework but the PSBOs do not keep the information up to date, so we added vague content around this instead.
- We explored adding the name of their current supplier in ‘Contracts’, so we can show a personalised view on the ‘Guidance' tab.
- We added a contracts logger feature under ‘My procurements’.
- We added content around compliance for every buying option, to show how it is specifically compliant.
- We can also explore supporting audits through the saved items feature.
- We added a ‘DfE chat’ feature, to probe users about this in the next round of user testing.
