Understanding the first set of tasks
We felt we had a reasonable idea of what the first set of tasks should be (opens in a new tab).
We knew that users would need to have a meeting or conversation with a Regional delivery officer (RDO), where the RDO would hand the project over to the caseworker.
This was based on several points of information, including:
- the initial Figma sketches
- talking to users at the workshop and co-design sessions in April and May 2022
- research we'd done using the radio button design
- guidance we'd read in caseworker training documents
- collaborative sketches made by the team when designing the checkbox approach
- card sort with caseworkers where they ordered task sections and tasks
We needed to validate the tasks with users, in the prototype, using the new design.
Testing the tasks and the new design
Rather than go over old ground, re-testing the tasks in one dedicated research session, we chose to trust our collective expertise and wait to test the new look of the project kick-off tasks together with the legal documents we'd been working on.
We made this decision for two reasons in particular.
- We're working at pace in an Agile way and we didn't want to slow ourselves down.
- We want to keep users engaged and asking them to use something we've already tested with them could cause them to feel that this was tedious.
Findings from the research
When we tested the legal documents tasks with users, that was also the first time they had seen or interacted with the new design pattern.
When users were interacting with the new design during the research to explore the legal document tasks, there was positive feedback about the new design.
There were no negative responses regarding the checkbox approach. They felt it was clear and it made sense to them.
Users remarked on the usefulness of the guidance and checklists as tools to help them understand what to do and complete the tasks.
However, this feedback wasn't specifically about the project kick-off tasks. We're extrapolating the positive feedback about the design for the legal document tasks to the project kick-off too.
What we need to do is see how the project kick-off tasks go in private beta. Based on all our user research so far, we have a very high level of confidence that what we have is helpful and fulfils the user needs. We'll learn if there's anything more to do there in private beta.
